Art of Fine Furniture Gallery Talk with David Lane

Loading Events

As a retired librarian and now furniture maker, David Lane will discuss how books and wood each play roles in his creative process. He will explore the connections and similarities they have, along with other influences that affect the artistic process. How many pieces in the show were created with other influences from aspects of the makers’ lives? This talk is sponsored by Abrasive Industrial Supplies (AIS) of Winona. Explore The Art of Fine Furniture, on exhibit through August 17 at the History Center. Sponsored by WNB Financial.

David’s piece in the show is titled, Fahrenheit 451 Fire Alarm Shelf. A tribute to twentieth century science fiction author Ray Bradbury, this piece is also a collaboration with Minnesota book-binder Brad Rubin. The books on the shelf are held in place with rare earth magnets and made entirely of wood, using inlay to decorate the spines. A fine-bound edition of Fahrenheit 451 is in the drawer, which is opened by pulling the fire alarm.
