SUMMARY:Sandbar Storytelling Festival: Project FINE Immigrant Stories
DESCRIPTION:Please join Sandbar Storytelling Festival at the History Center as staff from Project FINE introduces us to some of the most fascinating\, and many times heart-wrenching\, stories of immigrants from around the world who have landed in Winona. You will hear their stories\, some through language interpreters\, of how they left their home countries and came to the United States for a better and safer life for their families. \nThis event is free and open to the public. However\, the Wanek Room only holds 80 people. Arrive early to get a seat! Refreshments will be served. \nProject FINE (Focus on Integrating Newcomers through Education) has been serving refugees and immigrants in Winona County and the surrounding area since 1990.  \nSandbar Storytelling Festival presents storytelling performances which celebrate and preserve the power and pleasure of our varied cultural traditions and human experiences and promotes the art of storytelling for all ages. \n

SUMMARY:History Buff Book Chat: The Blossom and the Firefly
DESCRIPTION:For our September History Buff Book Chat\, we will discuss The Blossom and the Firefly by Sherri L. Smith. \nJapan 1945. Taro is a talented violinist and a kamikaze pilot in the days before his first and only mission. He believes he is ready to die for his country . . . until he meets Hana. Hana hasn’t been the same since the day she was buried alive in a collapsed trench during a bomb raid. She wonders if it would have been better to have died that day . . . until she meets Taro. \nA song will bring them together. The war will tear them apart. Is it possible to live an entire lifetime in eight short days? \nJoin in a conversation about a different book each month from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. The Book Chat group is open to everyone. Meet in Wanek Hall on the second floor of the Winona County History Center. Feel free to bring your lunch! \nUpcoming books:\nThe Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Meissner | October 28th \n
