Winona County Historical Society plans an annual year-end giving campaign that helps us to keep the lights on for another season of important work in history. In this post series, you’ll hear from WCHS staff members about why your giving is vital for this organization’s mission. We’re excited to partner with you again as we look to the future of our communities in Winona County.

Supporting Local History Experiences for All

By Jennifer Weaver, Museum Educator

This past year, thanks to a $65,000 grant from the Minnesota Humanities Center with MN Legacy funds, we took our work of community surveys, ideas, and our exhibit strategic plan to the schematic design level. Now, phase 1 of a new museum experience will be opening in May 2026 thanks to contributions to the History is Present campaign! Museum staff, the Native Advisory Council, community curators, artists, and crafts people are working to bring ideas for new exhibits to life this fall and winter.

In addition, a wide variety of quality programs and activities will continue with your support. Participation hit new records this past year. Over 1500 people enjoyed the Voices From the Past Cemetery Walk. The Museum Makers Classes and Winona Walking Tours expanded and continue to fill. 2026 will build on this success. Your donations help offer these fun educational opportunities and experiences for locals and visitors alike.

Your generosity and enthusiasm ensure these experiences can be offered year after year, new and tradition-making favorites, for you and your fellow history buffs. WCHS truly is a vibrant community organization.
