Portraits of Winona County People & Places
WCHS Collections Exhibition
December 2 – March 2
In the “Portraits of Winona County People & Places” gallery exhibition, explore 13 select pieces from the WCHS collection featuring portraits and landscapes of the area, now through March 2nd.
Amongst the several portraits in the show is Emma Shelton, who opened her beauty shop in Winona at 63 West Second Street on May 13, 1909. She was born March 1, 1865, in Hot Springs, Arkansas to a black mother and former slave. Her father was African, Irish, and Cherokee. Emma worked in her shop until she was 85 years old as a beautician and podiatrist.
The show also highlights the large portraits of Burr and Clara Blair painted by Nicholas Brewer (1857 – 1949). Brewer was born in Olmsted County Minnesota to a farm family. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and found himself painting portraits of U.S. Grant, Henry Ward Beecher, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and many other prominent people of his time.
The show not only brings you people, but also some Winona County places too. Stop in to see a landscape of Winona, Minnesota in 1867 from Clark’s Lane. It was painted by Alfred A. Sederberg (1830 – 1877), who immigrated to Red Wing, Minnesota in the 1860s where he painted portraits and landscapes.
